Network Address Translation must be performed on all packets traversing the firewall on your network. For applications like email or file transfer, the NAT process is relatively seamless. With SIP, however, NAT requires an additional step. NAT only changes the IP address information on the "outside" of the packet; SIP packets are carried inside traditional packets and contain their own address information. Without an extra step, NAT only changes the address on the outside of the packet. This can cause issues like one-way audio when not properly dealt with. Luckily, performing NAT for SIP is usually just a matter of using a SIP-aware firewall, like the Edgewater Edgemarc or the InGate SIParator, that changes the IP address information on the inside as well as the outside of the packet. Your SIP provider should be able to resolve this issue relatively easily.
