Backbone

From Bandipedia

Each carrier's network is made up of a backbone of high-speed circuits, often optical circuits such as OC-48s and above. The architecture of a carrier's backbone gives you insight into how fast the network will run, how well it will respond to problems or outages, and how it will interact with other carriers' backbones.
