Digital Signal Processor

Equipment in a VoIP network that prepares a VoIP signal for transmission over an IP network. The DSP uses algorithmic intelligence to implement compression to speech, control echo, buffer latency and jitter, and treat a number of nuances in the packetization process with the goal of delivering the spoken word in a usable format. The entire process is called vocoding. Once the vocoding is complete, the DSP loads the VoIP packets into a batch ready for transmission. This batching process is called framing. Framing relies on codex presets such as G.729a or G.723.1 to decide how many packets are applied to each frame.
