How do I set up Authoritative DNS?

From Bandipedia

Some carriers will register a domain name for you with the root servers on the Internet. If you prefer to do this on your own, you can use the services of a number of DNS registrars. (http://www.internic.net/origin.html) Aside from registering a domain name, you must establish at least one Authoritative DNS server. (Preferably two or more in different locations for redundancy) Another option is to pay a registrar, or your Carrier to host the Authoritative DNS. An excellent choice of DNS software for the Unix platform is DJBDNS. (http://cr.yp.to/djbdns.html) Servers also exist for the Windows environment.
