What’s the difference between an Authoritative DNS server and a DNS Cache?
From Bandipedia
Authoritative DNS answers for your domain name only while a DNS Cache answers nonauthoritatively for any domain name. Many of the common DNS servers available convolve both of these functions into one product, complicating the issue. Generally, for your computers at a location to be able to look up names like www.google.com, they need a DNS Cache. For others on the Internet to find your website or send you email, you need an Authoritative DNS server which can be run by your Carrier or yourself.
