Session Initiation Protocol
An application-layer control protocol, a Signaling protocol for IP communications. Essentially it's used for setting up communications sessions on the internet. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) played a large role in deveoping SIP back in the late 80's. Initially it was meant to replace H.323.
