Country regulations

In an effort to combat scams and enhance SMS trust, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has created a mandatory SMS Sender ID Register. Effective July 1, 2026, non-registered alphanumeric Sender IDs will no longer be supported.

Sender ID criteria

A Sender ID must:

  • Only consist of letters, numbers, and symbols - these should correspond to decimal codes 32-126 from the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII)

  • Be at least 2 but no more than 11 characters long

  • Not consist only of numbers

  • Not contain a space or underscore at the beginning or end

  • Not contain the word “Unverified”

  • Not contain words that are offensive, deceptive, or misleading

  • Not consist of one or more restricted terms

A Sender ID can:

  • Be the same as your organization's name or a shortened version of it (e.g., “Bandwidth” or “Band”)

  • An acronym, contraction, abbreviation, or initialism of your name (e.g., “NASA”)

  • Include extra words that relate to your organization's function, location, or purpose of the message (e.g., “NASA Alerts”)

Note: Sender IDs are not case sensitive (e.g., “ABC” is considered the same as “abc”).

Valid use cases

You can register a Sender ID only if you are:

  • An individual acting in a business capacity

  • A body corporate

  • A corporation sole

  • A body politic

  • A government entity

  • A partnership

  • Any other unincorporated association or body of person

  • A trust

  • A superannuation fund

In addition, your Sender ID must match one of the following use cases, depending on whether your organization has an Australian Business Number (ABN) or not:

If you have an ABN, your Sender ID must match:

  • Registered business name in the Business Names Register, and the status must be “Registered”

  • Registered company name in the Australian Business Register (ABR), and the status must be “Active”

  • Registered trademark in IP Australia's Trade Mark Search or equivalent register, and the status must be “Registered”

  • Registered domain name on WHOIS, the entity is the “registrant,” and the domain name is used for an active and legitimate website, or an active email address

If your organization doesn’t have an ABN, your Sender ID must match:

  • Name on a trademark register

  • Name on an official register or record in the country in which the entity is based

There is an exception to the valid use case requirements if:

  • The entity is a government agency; and

  • The sender identification relates to an emergency, or a matter of public health, safety or security; and

  • The entity has provided evidence to the provider that satisfies the provider of the reason why the agency intends to use the sender identification rather than its registered business name, company name, trademark, or registered domain name, as relevant

Verification process

  • If your organization has an ABN, the brand owner will receive an email for confirmation from ACMA and will need to have MyID access to complete identity verification.

  • If your organization doesn’t have an ABN, our local partner will send the authorized representative an email with a QR code or verification link to complete identity verification through Veriff.

After you submit your request to Bandwidth, we’ll inform you of the rejection reasons/registration confirmation.

Content restrictions

Adult, religious, political, and gambling content is prohibited. In addition, avoid sending spam – see Spam Act 2003 and Spam Regulations 2021 and any future amendments for more information.
