When monitoring message delivery, focusing on the following metrics will help you get a holistic view of delivery performance and understand both the health of your messaging system and areas for improvement:
Delivery Rate: The percentage of messages successfully delivered to the recipient’s device out of the total messages sent. This is your primary indicator of success.
Failure Rate / Error Rate: The percentage of messages that failed to deliver due to issues such as invalid numbers, carrier filtering, or network problems.
Message Sent Rate: The number of messages that were successfully sent from your system to the carrier or messaging platform.
Latency / Delivery Time: The average time it takes for a message to be delivered after being sent. High latency might indicate network or carrier delays.
Undelivered Messages / Bounce Rate: Messages returned as undelivered or bounced back; these can indicate invalid recipient numbers or blocked messages.
Spam or Filtering Rate: Messages flagged or blocked by carriers or spam filters, which can impact overall deliverability.
User Engagement Metrics: For certain campaigns, tracking replies, click-through rates on included links, or conversion rates can inform message effectiveness.
Throughput: Volume of messages processed in a given timeframe, important for capacity planning and to spot unusual drops or spikes.
Carrier-Specific Metrics: Different carriers may provide unique status codes and insights into failures or delays that can help pinpoint problems.
