Number Portability Administration Center (NPAC)

Author: Anagha Ravi

The NPAC (Number Portability Administration Center) is part of the infrastructure for the telecommunications industry, providing the portability that supports the continued convergence of wireline, wireless, Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and IP communications. Today, the NPAC is the world’s largest number portability registry, managing over 500 million telephone numbers for over 2,000 carriers across the U.S. and Canada.

How is Bandwidth involved with NPAC

NPAC is the central mediation center for all LNP activity. NPAC enables Bandwidth to look at telephone number ownership. It is also beneficial for associating a Location Routing Number (LRN) to a telephone number.

What are the benefits of NPAC

When porting numbers, the losing carrier’s information is obtained by the NPAC, which then identifies the true carrier of a phone number, and allows all porting transactions to occur between all the different Local Exchange Carriers (LECs).
